Lotusphere 2009: “Share-Something”, Ed Brill, And Why Migrations Don’t Make Financial Sense
Aside from catching a nasty cold in Orlando, I thoroughly enjoyed Lotusphere 2009. We met with a ton of Lotus customers interested in accessing SharePoint document libraries from Lotus Notes -- despite IBM’s refusal to utter the word SharePoint during the keynote. (I believe Kevin Cavenaugh called it “Share-Something.”) People really liked business mashups that integrate SharePoint document libraries with Lotus Notes 8.5, Domino, and Eclipse applications. Others simply want to integrate SharePoint with their existing Lotus Notes 6.5.x or 7.x platform – at least for now.
I also enjoyed Ed Brill’s and David Via’s session, “Notes Domino Market Update and Fundamentals of Collaboration Business Value,” presented January 18th. Here are a few stats they shared, which may be useful if you’re evaluating a migration from Notes to Outlook and Exchange:
1. According to Ferris Research Report #571, TCO between Outlook/Exchange and Notes is almost identical on a per user basis.
2. The cost to migrate email systems is typically $300 per mailbox. Ferris offers a nifty migration calculator for estimating migration costs, assuming no application migration is involved. David Ferris bakes hardware, software, labor, and end user disruption costs into the calculator, which is available free-of-charge. While the calculator and accompanying report are now six years old, Ed maintains the analysis is still valid.
3. Internal IBM numbers indicate the cost to migrate collaboration applications costs at least twice as much as migrating email, with all of the re-specification, re-scoping, and re-development efforts involved.
